4 Days at Samsing

What an awesome week. We had our good friends, the Otts, here for a two week visit. Halfway through, Troy's sister and family showed up for a surprise visit. So what better to do with all of them?.... go camping! So we packed up our gear, grabbed Kris and his daughter, and headed out. Three trips out and 12 people later (Nelly is off visiting G'pa and G'ma so we are down a kid) we showed up at the cabin that can sleep 15. The weather was beautiful the entire time, and we spent our days fishing, tide-pooling, firewood gathering, swimming, swinging, sun bathing, eating...... I only took a few pictures, but I picked my favorite ones and here they are-- all 70 or so!

samsing cabin....

the downstairs, before all our gear!.....
and the upstairs.....

megan, trystan and kristin......

the rope swing over the water was a main attraction.

andrew swings out....

and then trystan takes her turn......

the big kids wanted a turn on the other swing.

kevin does an underdog......

then kris wanted a turn pushing troy......

if he pulls hard enough, maybe troy will end up

in the bushes.....

yep, works great!......

we went scouting for signs of bear, and sure enough, found it.

turns out there is a sow and a cub hanging out near the cabin,

as discovered by one of the kids on her way back to the cabin with a

load of firewood. she looks up and about 15 feet from her is the cub

standing on the trail, watching her. she remembered what she had been taught

and didn't run until AFTER the cub passed on by. we shot a few rounds

into the woods to scare it off and watched mama bear pop her head up

right above us, where she had been watching us, and they ran off into the woods....

jake enjoys a little kayak time....

coming back from firewood gathering, armed and ready....

meg tries a little wading time.....

then andrew jumps in....

then ALL the kids joined in.....

andrew and trystan, working on a little sun time.....

jen shows that even though we are roughing it, we

can still brush our teeth....

leigh brought her toothbrush too......

kristin follows meg on a tidepool excursion.....

time for a little sit down.....

and then off they go again, this time with trystan.....

a raisin box makes a perfect hidey-hole for a crab, just so you know....

caden found great treasures under the rocks....

ok, time to make a little noise!.....

meg, pretty in pink.....

kris and trystan, loading up....

uncle jake, ready to rock and roll....

kristin gets to have a turn....

jen and jenn, reading in the sun....

kris thinks he's gonna dunk meg......

since the bear is around, you better go to the potty loaded.....

is that auntie leigh?.....

caden and andrew work on getting the home made

table to the campfire.....

won't be long before troy can sit and relax....

like i'm doing!.....

yep, relaxing is what we do when camping....

uh.... just read the shirt.....

troy loved his new fire claw.....

auntie leigh and kristin, enjoying the good stuff....

jake needs a nap.....

jiffy pop and a campfire-- interesting.....

the tide was high enough to go off the rope swing.....

the let go.....

and the landing....

trystan's turn....

take off......

and letting go.....

and the nose plug.....

great form......

splits?.......

think he'll let go?.....

on one of the fishing trips, we saw a raft of sea otters.....

dip-netting for sockeye. troy trying it from the shore.....

getting the boat right up to the falls- YIKES!.....

waiting for the fish.....

okay, so after spending a little bit too much time in the boat,

jen and i got a little goofy and started a picture-taking trend.....

had to get trystan in on it.....

oh, all right, i'll put mine in there too.

what can i say? we were hungry and the mood just hit....

here's a little better view, outside the cabin......

the approach to the runway is right over samsing so

we had a few alaska airline jets fly over every day....

can't go camping without your boots....

here we are as a group. don't look to close-- we haven't showered

for 4 days!! in order-- kris, trystan, meg, jenn, troy, kristin, leigh ann,

jake, caden, andrew, kevin, jen....

the only rain we had was a little drizzle as we were breaking up

camp. nothing to bat an eye at......

we had a great time and made some lasting memories. we couldn't have gone out

with a better group of people. let's do it again!

Love it all! Every picture!! Brrr. How could those kiddos swim?? How many fish did you dip net? We stayed in a cabin with the same floor plan last week in Kenai. Our place was not remote as yours. Glad thase bears kept their distance. And glad you popped off a few rounds to show whose boss:)
We ( son, 2 g'sons, sis, bro in law +2 nephews) ate heads and carcasses of all 23 silvers we caught one night. Too full for our s'mores after that. Didn't think to try Jiffy Pop. We LOOOVE Alaska. So glad you do too!!! Thanks for posting this great blog!
Love You, Susie
