At The Ends Of The Road

There was a news article in the local paper about a whale washed ashore out in Chiniak. Of course we couldn't let that go without checking it out, so we grabbed a much needed day off and headed out to investigate. We weren't sure exactly where it was, so we were happy to see it there in plain sight, just off the road. Even better, the tide was out, so we were able to get right up to it. And even better than the tide being out was that the bears, although around, were not defending it yet! That was helpful!!
the whale is laying belly-up... look how big it is next to andrew...

part of the front flipper....

yes, he stunk quite nicely....

have a stick, will poke dead whale....

our kids are SO not city kids....

this is the upper jaw....

eagles were around, wating for their share....

low tide, looking towards chiniak....

if it's a rock it needs to be climbed...

 time for a little tide-pooling....

after being near the stinky whale, we were ready for lunch...

meg and chili...

dad and the kids...

when you head out the road, you arrive at a T- left takes you to chiniak, where the whale was. we weren't ready to come home yet, so when we hit the T on the way back, we kept going to the right, which takes you to pasagshak and our favorite beach, fossil beach....

there were surfer dudes out there catching their waves...

we were too late to see the bears that passed through-this is the cub...
 ....and this is the mama....

one side of fossil beach...

yep, that's us...

the fog was rolling in and out....

how would you like to live here?....

and of course, the family pose to end the day...
