Appleton Cove Cabin

Last week we had friends here from Kodiak so Troy and Kevin spent most of the time fishing for halibut and shrimp. They decided to go up to Hoonah Sound and spend the night at one of the Forest Service cabins. Rumor has it that the area they went to is where you can load up on shrimp. The rumor proved to be true. They didn't have much time so they were only able to set the pots once, but came home with a sinkfull! The trip up there is about 1 hour and 45 minutes by boat. They didn't start until late due to a meeting Troy had to go to first. But there was plenty of daylight left so they were not concerned. Well, after setting the halibut subsistance line and the shrimp pots on the way to the cabin, the daylight was used up, so they had to find the cabin in the dark. After giving Kevin a tiny head lamp to use, and searching for the cabin for about 20 minutes, Troy remembers that the spot light is under the seat! They pulled it out and it lit up the bay like the Fourth of July!! By this time it about 11:30 pm and the boys are starving. There is a mooring bouy that they were going to moor up to and set up a pulley system to get the boat to the beach and back. But there was not enough line to loop, so they just decided to beach the boat. The timing of the tides were just right that the boat would be refloated by the time they were ready to go in the morning. Well, that almost didn't work since the tide wasn't as high the next day as it had been the night before!! After biting their nails in anxious anticipation, the tide stopped coming in after floating half of the boat. They were barely able to push it out enough to get it floating again. But it was close. Otherwise they would have had to wait for the next high tide at midnight!! And I would have been calling the Coast Guard to go find them if they were not back by dinnertime, the agreed upon cut-off time. They had a fun time and put more memories on the boat! Here is the boat, waiting for the tide............

Caden and Andrew had a great time together!!!.....
