Samsing Cove Cabin

We always do something over Memorial Day weekend, so this year we rented one of the Forest Service Cabins for 5 nights. We got there Wednesday afternoon and left Sunday afternoon. We actually had it for one more night, but by Sunday we were ready for a soft mattress and warm running water! We had such a fun time. The weather was great, the fire was warm, and the food was delicious. Here are a few of the pictures that I took that should give you an idea of the fun time we had. This is the cabin - it is a two story that has two single and two double bunks downstairs as well as upstairs. It has an oil burning stove for heat and lots of counter space to cook on. It also has two huge tables in it to fit everybody. It is a popular and therefore hard to get cabin since it is only a ten minute boat ride from town. It sits in Samsing Cove which is so peaceful and calm that you might forget it is part of the ocean and not a lake! The commercial fishermen like to come in there at night to anchor until the next day because it is right near the fishing grounds. We were there with our friends Don and Karen and their two boys and two dogs so we had a nice crowd. It was so much fun that Karen and I are already talking about the next weekend to get a cabin and which one to get!

can't have a campsite without the camp fire, and you can't have a campfire without
a kid near by helping to keep it flaming! Here Andrew enjoys the task.......
the fire needed firewood so Troy got busy........
here he brings it to the campsite..........
nice thing about kids.. Mom doesn't have to get wood!!......
the campfire was a favorite place to be.......
aahhhhh..... can you feel the heat?.......
enjoying ourselves at the fire..............
what camfire would be right without s'mores?!......
ooooooh, that's good!
savor it!.........
satisfaction.........
here is a commercial boat anchored out.......
the kids spent the ENTIRE time looking for crabs and
filling their buckets with them......
a peaceful campsite..........
we had quite the time cooking the corn. I think it fell in
the fire 3 times, but it sure tasted good!!!!............
our boats anchored out at sunset..............
the oil stove and two of the bunks.........
we had an adventure with a bear while we were there. we knew he was
in the area because we saw tracks the first day, we could hear him
splashing in the creek at night, and the dogs were alerting on him every
now and then. so we had three pistols with us all the time. well, one morning
I decided to take a walk at low tide and casually thought that I should grab
my .44 but just kept walking, not that worried about it. so
imagine my thoughts as I realized that I should stay put until the bear
left the area. that would be the same bear that I was watching walk across
the meadow about 100 yards away. so I got on my cell and called Troy and Don
and said, "come now! I need a gun!!" I think they were there within 2.3 seconds!!
the bear heard them coming and took off running. just so you know, a bear is not
a problem as long as it has a fear and respect for humans. but once it starts
to get comfortable around humans and lose that fear, then you have a problem. so far, the
bear has proved to be okay. until that night..... at 2 am, we were awakened to the bear trying
to get in the cabin through the door that Troy had decided to lock that night. we listened as he
made his way around the cabin checking things out and scrounging for food. we are real
careful not to leave any laying around, but he did manage to find the one pile of coffee grounds
and eat those up. the next morning we saw his tracks all around, including right at the window.
I wanted to get a picture to put in here, but all I found was the one below. I am not trying
to be gross, but since this was the only thing I could get a picture of, I decided to include it.....
misty would have been the perfect appetizer for the bear.......
this is where I saw the bear - we went there to look for tracks
and maybe flush him out. all we found were tracks and a creek to
jump across..........
helping me across the creek........
Troy was throwing rocks into this pool and Ruby would stick her whole head in
to get them. she stayed under so long I thought she was going to drown. but
she always came back up with the same rock!!!!.........
watch out!!!!!.........
coming back from looking for the bear......
my girls......
meg enjoying camp food at the fire..........
one day we had more friends show up with their two labs
so we had quite a pack... two labs, three goldens,
and one papillon............
on Sunday we followed Don and Karen out to the fishing grounds
at Biorka Island. it was nice having local knowledge to show
us the short cuts in calmer water......
just chillin, waiting for the fish........

in two days we caught a total of 6 salmon - five Kings
and one Sockeye..........
Now we are home and we get to unpack 6 days worth of camping gear and a lifetime of memories! We can hardly wait to see where we will be next.....
