Today we had our monthly search and rescue training. Since it is winter now and the snow has arrived, it was decided that we would work on avalanche beacons. We hiked up to a muskeg where a couple beacons were buried. We then took the ones that we were wearing and turned them onto "recieve" mode. We then worked fast to find the buried beacons before the avalanche "victim " suffocated. It was a lot of fun and very good and neccesary training. I decided to take Andrew with me and he was allowed to wear a beacon and help search. He was very proud of himself when he found one! He lasted for 3 hours before he got cold. It was snowing wet snow and only 34* so we were all freezing. So for a little guy to last that long was impressive! After he got too cold he and I hiked out and drove to town where we ran home and filled every thermos and insulated coffee cup we have with hot water. We then headed back out to where the training was taking place and when the rest of the team hiked out they had warm hot chocolate and cider ready. Ahhhh...... winter. My favorite season!!
