One thing about Alaska aircrews, military and civilian alike, is that they learn to fly in some extreme conditions and gain a confidence that is not seen elsewere. Sunday was a perfect example of that. The weather was beautiful - at the 500' above sea level. Below that was fog so thick that you couldn't see the tip of your nose. We were at the Air Station in the afternoon when the flight was ready to return. They decided to sit up on the mountain overlooking Sitka and wait for the fog to burn off enough to get in, but when the fuel started getting low, they decided to land at the ferry terminal and have fuel trucked out to them. As they were coming down, they figured, hey, why not tip toe in and just get home. So that is what they did - very slowly, but very professionally. It was like watching them land in stealth mode! You can see below just how thick the fog was......
